If you’re working towards Qualified Teacher Status and don’t have a GCSE grade 4 (C) or above in Maths, you’ll need an equivalent before you can start your course. At QTS Maths Tutor, we hear a lot of confusion about how to get one, so let’s clear a few things up.
Myth 1: “You have to resit the actual GCSE.”
Not true. Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is a widely accepted alternative, and training providers treat a pass as equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 (C). It’s Ofqual regulated, so there’s no question over whether it counts, and you can check exactly what’s covered in TQUK’s Functional Skills qualifications if you want the detail before you commit.
Myth 2: “There’s a discount code you can just find online.”
Also not true, and worth knowing before you go looking. Any code claiming to be genuine on a forum or voucher site can’t actually be verified, since codes aren’t issued through third parties. What is real is a current 20% off sale, but you get it by getting in touch directly rather than by hunting one down yourself.
Myth 3: “It’ll take ages to sort, so you might as well just resit the GCSE.”
The opposite is usually true. Functional Skills is designed to be flexible and faster than the traditional GCSE route, with exams available to sit from home all year round rather than waiting for a fixed exam season.
