Online GCSE Exams

Most teacher training routes ask for a grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths. If you are missing that grade, you may be wondering whether you can sit the exam online instead of going back to an exam hall.

Can you sit GCSE exams online?

You can sit a GCSE-level maths exam online, but not a UK GCSE. UK GCSE Maths from AQA, OCR, Edexcel and WJEC is sat in person at an exam centre.

The online option is the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Maths. You sit it from home with a live Pearson invigilator. It is graded 9 to 1 and accepted by colleges, universities and most employers as equivalent to GCSE Maths.

Will my teacher training provider accept it?

Many providers accept an International GCSE, but entry rules vary. Ask your provider before you book, and keep their reply.

Exam series and times

International GCSE Maths runs in two series a year, Summer and November. It is not on demand, so plan around the series that fits your application deadline. Exams start at 09:00 or 13:30 UK time.

What you need to sit at home

  • Valid photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence
  • A laptop with a webcam, a phone with Pearson’s app and a backup recorder
  • A quiet, private room, not a shared space
  • A responsible adult nearby for the whole exam (not your tutor)
  • Pearson’s familiarisation session, which is compulsory

Pass GCSE enters you with Pearson as a remote invigilation candidate and guides you through the ID check and familiarisation. See online GCSEs at Pass GCSE.
