Online A Levels: Can You Sit A Level Exams From Home?
Yes, you can sit A Level exams from home if you take the Pearson Edexcel International A Level, which is sat online with a live Pearson invigilator watching over you through your webcam. So if you’re looking at online A Levels because a career change means you need new qualifications before a degree, you don’t have to find an exam hall or take time off work for every paper.
Pass Learn is one of the only providers in the world offering online A Level courses and exams this way, and it’s open to anyone, with no evidence or reason needed to sit at home. One thing to know from the start: UK A Levels from AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC, and Cambridge International A Levels, are still sat at an exam centre, so everything below is about the Pearson Edexcel route.
Why Career Changers Are Looking at Home Exams
At QTS Maths Tutor, we know plenty of adults decide on a new direction a little later, and the first hurdle is often the A Levels a university course asks for. If that’s you, we’d recommend looking for a provider who can enter you for the exam, guide you through the setup and let you sit each paper from your own home.
The good news is that sitting as an adult doesn’t put you at a disadvantage. Pass Learn’s guide to A Levels for adults explains that adult candidates sit the same specifications, papers and marking as everyone else, and the certificate doesn’t mention that you were a private candidate. A Levels also carry UCAS points, which is useful if a degree is your next step.
Your Home Exam Kit Checklist
Before you book, run through this list and make sure you can tick off every item:
- Valid, in-date photo ID: a passport, national identity card, driving licence or UK citizenship card (expired ID isn’t accepted)
- A laptop with a webcam, kept on mains power during the exam
- A phone with Pearson’s app installed
- A backup recorder, charged and with enough storage
- A printer and scanner with plenty of ink and paper, for paper-based subjects
- A quiet, private room rather than a shared space
- A parent, guardian or other responsible adult (not your tutor or teacher)
Your responsible adult needs to be there when you log in, then stay available outside the room for the whole exam. They supervise any toilet break (the exam clock keeps running) and call Pearson’s helpline if your connection drops. There’s a full rundown of the setup on Pass Learn’s page about A Level exams sat at home.
From Booking to Results: The Steps
Once your kit is sorted, the process follows a clear order:
- Book through Pass Learn’s online checkout, and the exams team gets in touch within one working day
- Send a photo of your ID with the details Pearson needs, so it goes with your entry
- Pass Learn enters you with Pearson as a remote invigilation candidate
- Complete Pearson’s familiarisation session, which includes a tech check and is compulsory
- Hold your ID up to the camera at the start of familiarisation and again at each exam
- Sit your papers, then wait for Pearson to release results on the results day for your series
Skipping familiarisation isn’t an option, because without it Pearson removes your entry with no refund. If you’d like to understand how Pearson invigilates exams remotely, the invigilator can see and hear you throughout, but you can’t see or hear them, and they only talk to you by typing in a chat box.
When You Can Sit Your Papers
International A Level exams run in the January, Summer (May/June) and October series, depending on the subject, so you can’t sit them at any time of year. Each exam starts at 07:00 or 10:00 UK time, which is worth checking against your time zone if you live abroad.
The Six Subjects You Can Book Online
Twelve subjects can be sat online through Pass Learn, and six of them can be booked on their own as an exam. Each booking covers the whole subject, with entry to every paper, familiarisation, results and a Pearson certificate.
Psychology has four paper-based units, from social and cognitive psychology through to clinical psychology, and you can sit A Level Psychology from home in the Summer series.
History is one of the onscreen subjects, so you type your answers across four two-hour papers. Pass Learn lets you sit A Level History from home in the Summer series.
Law has two three-hour papers covering the English legal system and the law in action. You can sit A Level Law from home in the Summer series only.
Geography covers global challenges, geographical investigations, contested planet and a research unit where you choose one of four options. It’s paper-based, and you can sit A Level Geography from home in the Summer series.
Economics mixes multiple-choice, data response and essay questions over four units. If you’d rather not wait for the Summer, you can sit A Level Economics from home in the October series as well.
Business has four two-hour papers, from marketing and people to global business, with source-based sections and 20-mark essays. Like Economics, you can sit A Level Business from home in either the Summer or October series.
Will Universities Accept It?
These are internationally recognised qualifications, and UK universities accept International A Levels grade for grade. Pearson describes its Pearson Edexcel International A Levels as globally recognised qualifications that open doors to top universities worldwide. As the specification differs from UK A Levels, it’s still worth checking the entry requirements for the exact course you have in mind.
Fitting Study Around Work
You don’t have to buy a course to book an exam, but many adults like the structure of one. Pass A Level offers distance learning A Levels that you can start any time, with a personal learning plan and worked solutions designed for independent study. Courses often take one to two years, though motivated learners can finish in about 12 months.
Conclusion
If your career change depends on A Levels, sitting them from home takes travel and time off work out of the picture. Get your kit checklist sorted, pick the series that suits your subject and book early, as places are limited. You can compare subjects and options on Pass Learn’s page of online A Level courses and exams.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sit a UK A Level from home instead?
No. UK A Levels and Cambridge International A Levels are always sat at an exam centre. Only the Pearson Edexcel International A Level can be sat online from home with a live invigilator.
Do I need a reason to choose remote invigilation?
No. The option is open to anyone, and you don’t need to give any evidence or reason for sitting your exams at home.
Can I sit my exams from outside the UK?
Yes, as long as Pearson offers remote invigilation in your country, so check Pearson’s published guidance first. Exam times are set in UK time and the same ID rules apply.
Are coursework or practicals included?
No. Only written papers can be sat online, so there’s no coursework, practical or speaking test. Mock exams are sat at a centre only, never remotely.
What if I only want to resit some units?
Bookings cover the whole subject, including every paper. If you’re thinking about resitting only some units, speak to an adviser first.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. Pearson releases results on the results day for your series and issues a certificate, with digital certificates for candidates aged 16 or over.
