Numeracy Skills Test Pass Mark

What is the numeracy skills test pass mark?
Many students ask what is the pass mark for the numeracy skills test? The pass mark for the numeracy skills test varies from test to test but on average it is reported to be around 65% which is 18 out of 28.
Learn Direct who provide the tests on behalf of the government have a large bank of questions that are pulled from randomly for each set of tests. This is to ensure that people taking the test share the questions in advance to others and are unlikely to see the same questions again if they have to re-sit.
So how is the numeracy skills test pass mark calculated?
With a given test, all of the scores will be added together and an average score calculated, this is then fit against what is called a normal distribution curve and undergoes a process called standardisation. All this means is that the numeracy skills test pass mark changes regularly but generally sits within a range. If the numeracy skills test you take is slightly easier then naturally the pass mark will be higher, if the test contains some really difficult questions that many candidates struggled on then the pass mark will be higher. From the feedback we have had from our numeracy skills students, the pass mark varies between 60% to 80% so between 17 and 22. We believe that generally a score of around 18 is what is required to pass the numeracy skills test.
