At QTS Maths Tutor we help learners with gaining access to teacher training courses by taking GCSE Equivalent qualifications. One equivalent qualification that is the most popular alternative to the GCSE is a Functional Skills Level 2 Equivalent qualification in maths or English. These are equivalent to a grade C or level 4 at GCSE. Since the functional skills exams can be taken at any point throughout the year and the curriculum isn’t as large, they tend to be more accessible to adult learners.

Please note that the functional skills qualifications are only accepted by teaching apprenticeship routes. If you are planning on doing a PGCE or schools direct route, you will need a GCSE equivalency test instead which is the most accepted equivalent for teacher training specifically. For those going down the apprenticeship route or any other University route outside of teaching then the functional skills level 2 in maths and English will be the best options.

Both functional skills qualifications are Ofqual regulated and backed by multiple exam boards including City & Guilds and Open Awards. So Learners have a good chance of finding an exam that will perfectly suit their needs. In conclusion the Functional Skills Level 2 Equivalent qualifications tend to be the most popular alternative to a GCSE exam, and are widely accepted outside of teaching routes. For teaching, unless it is an apprenticeship, you will need to take the GCSE equivalency tests.
